COPD Awareness Week 13th to 17th November

COPD Awareness Week is happening during 13th to 17th November, with many events taking place nationwide to increase awareness of the disease ( www.copd.ie).

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition which makes it more difficult for patients to breathe and is a progressive lung disease.  The most common type of COPD is Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis.

COPD is one of the most common respiratory diseases in Ireland.  There are approximately 150,000 people in Ireland diagnosed with the disease.

According to medical research, the number one cause of COPD is smoking and about 40 – 50% of lifelong smokers will develop COPD (European Lung Foundation).  However it is also possible for non-smokers to develop the condition.

Symptoms of COPD may be mild at first, with shortness of breath and coughing.  As disease progresses, breathing can become increasingly difficult.  However, treatment can help ease symptoms and slow progression.  Treatment with medication using a nebuliser can help to prevent flare-ups and exacerbations.
